Sunday afternoon

This afternoon we went to the cathedral in Sevilla. It did not open until 2:30 and we were first in line. This time they just turned us loose instead of a guided tour. It was so huge and amazingly beautiful! It is the largest Gothic temple in the world and the 3rd largest in th Christian world and was built on the original 12th century site of the principal Mosque of the city. Again the artwork and craftmenship was intricate and detailed. I am not sure how many pipe organs there were but I counted at least 6 almost floor to ceiling. In the cathedral, both the remains of the Christian king, and patron of Seville, Fernando 3rd and Christopher Columbus are buried! Before we went inside, the guide explained that if you went to the Dominican, they claim you can visit the burial site of Christopher Columbus and if you go to Puerto Rico they also claim they can take you to the burial site of Columbus. But Spain is the only one who has done DNA testing on the remains to prove it actually is Columbus. I found that very cool cause it it means they know who his descendents are. How cool would it be to be able to say my great great great x whatever grandfather is Christopher Columbus? Really cool!

Part of the cathedral is the Giralda which is universally known as the symbol of the city of Seville. It was initially the tower of Seville's principal mosque. It is 97 meters high and is crowned with a weather vane known as the Giraldillo, a giant bronze figure representing faith victorious. You can climb the inside of the tower to the level of the bells and get a great view of the city. A great workout and worth the climb 36 stories!

After our cathedral visit, it was back on the bus to head to the next hotel 4 hours away. We went to a coastal town called Malaga right on the Mediterranean. It was originally a brutish colony and is filled with the English. The kids love it! Block after block of shops! Of course most were closed by the time we got there but we did make our way down through the streets and shops to the beach, about a 10 minute walk! So, I dipped my toes in the Med sea! Wow! Almost as cool as Christopher Columbus! That was our day. Another exhausting one but so much fun!

Must go now ... So much to see, so little time! Ciao!
